Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination(IUI) is commonly the first assisted reproduction option offered to couples experiencing fertility problems. It has the advantage of being less invasive and more affordable compared to In-vitro Fertilization (IVF).

However, IUI is not the only artificial insemination procedure being performed. Alternatives to IUI include:

  • Intravaginal Insemination(IVI)
  • Intracervical Insemination(ICI)
  • Intratubal Insemination(ITI)

Sperm used in IUI

Most of the time, it is the male partner's sperm that is used for IUI. There are times, though, when couples opt to use a sperm donor.

Why use Donor Sperm?

There are many reasons for using donor's sperm in order to conceive. Couples can turn to this option in order to get pregnant. Men without sperm, a condition which may arise from a variety of causes such as infection, vasectomy or surgical trauma, may be unable to contribute a sample. Men with low sperm counts, poor sperm motility or genetic defects or infections are also candidates for this procedure. For more information on who should consider donor's samples, please contact the Repro Optima team.
